Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk was one of the very first things I swapped out from the supermarket.  When I saw how easy it was to make, there was no way I was going to keep buying it.

I’ve tried a few different versions since I started making it, and this is the recipe I’ve found I love the most.

And if you’re anything like me and you often bake on the spur of the moment, now you have one less thing you need to make sure you have in stock before you start!

What is sweetened condensed milk?

Condensed milk is milk that has been heated so that the majority of the water content has been removed, and it becomes sweetened when the sugar or other sweetener has been added.  I use it regularly in my baking, in particular our favourite Chooclate Chip Biscuit Recipe!

How do you make Sweetened Condensed Milk?

Sweetened Condensed Milk is one of the easiest things to make!  This version has 4 ingredients in it, and you’ll more than likely have them at home already!

milk – You can make condensed milk with either dairy or dairy-free milk.  I get my milk from Dreamview Creamery, and I love it’s creamy flavour.  Whichever milk you decide to use will depend on the flavour of your finished product.

sweetener – I usually use sugar in my Sweetened Condensed Milk, but you can also use other sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.  You can even make Caramel Sweetened Condensed Milk by using brown sugar!

butter – Adding butter to your condensed milk is optional, but I like to do this to give it a creamy finish.  I like to use my Homemade Butter for this recipe, but store-bought will do just fine too.

vanilla – this is also an added extra, but you can neve have too much vanilla!

Once you have your ingredients ready, making Sweetened Condensed Milk is really easy!

Simply combine the milk and sugar in a saucepan on the stove, and heat until the milk is reduced by half.  This takes about 30 minutes and it will change to its finished form very quickly when it’s ready.

Once your Sweetened Condensed Milk is ready, you can either finish it there, or remove it from the heat and add in the butter and vanilla if your wish.

How much does this recipe make?

I find this recipe makes about 1 cup, and I can store it in a small chutney jar.

How long does it last?

Sweetened Condensed Milk never lasts very long in my house, but you can store it in the fridge for a few weeks if needed, or you can even freeze it if you want to.

How can you use Sweetened Condensed Milk?

Condensed Milk can be used in a number of ways.  My favourite ways to use it are in Chocolate Chip Biscuits, Caramel Square, and Coconut Rough.  But you can also add it to your coffee for a bit of extra creaminess!
